Herding Demonstrations

The Spicy Lamb Farm does entertaining and educational sheep  herding demonstrations. Border collie demonstrations are a crowd pleaser for special events or parties. Email for pricing and scheduling availability. We can also bring the demonstration to you. $250 plus travel.

Border Collie Commands:

Come Bye—Orders the dog to move clockwise around the flock.

Away—Orders the dog to move counter-clockwise around the flock.

Lie down
—Upon this command, a well-trained Border Collie will instantly lie flat on the ground even in mid run.

Walk on
—Instructs the dog to walk straight toward the sheep which, in turn, causes the sheep to walk straight away from the dog. An experienced Border Collie will correct itself to the left or right in order to drive the flock in a straight line.

Steady
—This command is used to slow the dog. Some shepherds have a whistle command that combines "Walk-On and "Steady."

Look back
—When parts of the flock are separated, this command tells the dog to divert its attention from one part of the flock to another.

On your feet
—Tells the dog to move from a lying to a standing position.

That'll do
—To a Border Collie it means come here, the work is done or finished.

We use border collies for herding to manage the flock. We also keep Great Pyrenees as guardian dogs to protect sheep from predators.

Herding Training Clinics and Demonstrations
If you would like to learn how to herd sheep, we can schedule border collie demonstration and herding clinics with experienced trainers.

Herding Instinct Tests
Have one of our herding trainers come in and assess your dog to see if it is suitable to work sheep and can be trained for trials. We do these in group clinics or by appointment. A second and third session are recommended before investing in training. The length is of the assessment will depend on the dog so that the session ends on a positive note.

Dogs should be 6 months to a year old for their assessment. Common herding breeds include the Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Australian Kelpie, New Zealand Huntaway, and Australian Cattle Dog. Other breeds with herding instinct include Corgis and Shetland Sheepdogs.

Assessments run $50.

Herding Training Private Classes
Classes are available on Fridays or by appointment. For more information, please contact us.

Rent Sheep for Trial Dog Training
For those with trial experience, we will rent you the use of four to six sheep in our round pen, demonstration field, or pasture field for trial dog training for $20 per hour. The pasture field meets AKC B course and AHBA HTD course criteria.

Fun Trials
Our farm is available for fun trials. We plan one on September 22/23, 2012. Please contact us if you are interested.

Note: Please note that we are footrot free. Please make sure that you and your dog have clean feet and that you wear clothing that has not been around other sheep or livestock. We will ask you to disinfect your shoes and/or wear plastic shoe covers.

Border Collie Puppies
We have puppies each year. Email us if you are interested. We are hoping to breed Tip to Ike and have puppies in the spring.
